We could have picked “Pillow Talk”, “Glass Bottom Boat”, “A Touch of Mink” as our favorite Doris Day movies. Ms. Day went toe-to-toe with the greatest gay and straight heart throbs of Hollywood, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, David Niven, and made them all fall in love with her feminism.
As the iconic “Calamity Jane”, though, Day introduced the world to a female superhero. From saving her “man” ,from “Indians” to stopping a stagecoach, the movie revolved, for the first time, around her heroics in saving the Wild West.
Ms. Day’s open support of animal rights was also groundbreaking. No one had really thought about the issue. Issues like AIDS consumed Hollywood and the media.
Doris Day was a brilliant actress who inspired, promoted, and championed women in the workplace and the possibilities of the FEMININE with a smile and tons of style.
RIP from a huge fan who dreamed of growing up to be like you.
